More Crazy Talk from Bill Gates

bill_gates_halo_3.jpgThe CrazyGates 07 tour continues, this time in a Business Week article where, after commenting that he wouldn’t buy an iPhone…Why?

Because he likes to dial the numbers with one hand (of course), Bill Gates said the following:

So the key trend to look at is the importance of software and then say who really has shown the ability to do strong software? In some ways, just we have. If you define it more broadly, yes, Apple has done a few things well. Google has done a few things well. But the leaps in software and the kind of long-term investments we’re making make it clearer than ever that we picked the right business, and the right place to contribute.

so…ahem…WTF?

Windows Mobile software is horrible. It takes way too many clicks to get anything accomplished. Almost any mobile OS you can name is faster and better than Windows Mobile…

I’m beginning to think this is just some sort of “if we say it enough it will be true” kind of campaign.

Let me also state that I really, REALLY, respect Bill Gates for his philanthropy – but these interviews are getting ridiculous.

  1. i really do enjoy getting my MAC updates via your webiste, however, i was really diappointed to see the use of WTF in your commentary. #1 it was not necessary to get the point accross and #2 it would cause me to seek information elsewhere should i see its use agin on your website.

  2. This is for Kerry, If you don’t like how someone writes…go some were else. Were do you get off by telling others how to write and speak? You are not in charge!
    WTF!!

  3. Dave,

Nice of you to share your opinion (as was my comment).

I was interested in hearing from Michael and his intent on the continued use of offensive language in his website or the need for me to change my favorite website for Apple information to MacRumors or other such website.

  4. Kerry –

I appreciate your opinion, but I don’t consider these three letters to be offensive language. I can’t start changing the way I write to accommodate any one person, or I’ll have to start accommodating every single person on the site…and I just can’t do that.

If you do choose to not read this blog because of those three letters appearing one time on it, then I wish you well…but I would warn you not to read comments on TUAW, MacRumors or basically any other site on the web…because very few of them are censored.

The web isn’t about censorship, it’s about the freedom to communicate with your voice on whatever subject you choose.

    Thanks for reading.

  5. The way to find out if someone has taken offense to something you have written or stated would be to receive notification of the same, hence my comment. My choice to change websites would not be driven by the use of the acronym one time, but would drive it upon the use of it a second time.

Freedom is a relative term in this conversation. You can present/voice your opinion about a subject and clearly make the intent KNOWN through the English language without the demeaning, derogatory use of such explicatives.

    Thank you for your consideration.

  6. I couldn’t agree with you more: “I’m beginning to think this is just some sort of ‘if we say it enough it will be true’ kind of campaign.” LOL! Sadly, it may work for many.. people in general are much more susceptible to the power of suggestion than we would care to admit.

I have no interest in influencing how you write, but FWIW, Kerry isn’t the only one who would prefer to go without reading foul language or acronyms representing it. It’s just that most would stop reading without announcing it.

  7. I have to agree with Kerry, because if you want to apply the philosophy of: “if they do it , I do too!” is kind of childish and without personality. only the ignorant people and/or with lack of culture can express like this, with insults.

English has a vast of vocabulary, that you may use the next time before write a column; because not because everybody can write a column or a comentary in the web, is a columnist or writer.

    thank. you.

  8. I have to say, I’m really surprised that people are upset by 3 letters like this. I really am. It never occurred to me that would even be remotely offensive…especially with the language I read on TUAW and other blogs all the time (admittedly mostly in the comments, but still).

I still stand by the reaction…because that was (and still is) my reaction to old Billy-boys comments.

However, without you guys there is no audience…so I want to make sure you’re enjoying the blog. So I will keep it in mind in the future.

  9. Steve Grenier says:

WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF

oops? did I offend someone there?

Grow up guys, we aren’t little kids here, you need to get some, ahem… BALLS.

As for the article itself, yea Gates is a fool Windows Mobile is a horrible OS. I think he means they were the first really to expand it to so many devices, but nonetheless its still garbage. Gates is just talking out his ass lately.

  10. Sorry Steve, but I didn’t know that isult womebody it makes you cool :(

  11. Sorry Steve, but I didn’t know that isult somebody it makes you cool

  12. Lol guys. It’s not a matter of being childish, freakin’ out about it, etc. Between clean content and…not as clean..content, I’ll drift to the clean content because foul language is a turnoff. Since Kerry made a point to say something about it, I threw in my two cents. I’m not wiggin’ over here about it. Glad to see you’ll respect that, Michael. I feel the same way about Bill though. Where is it coming from?! I think there must be some severe disappointment at the world’s reaction to Vista. Maybe that’s where it comes from. After the disappointment comes the bitterness.

Plus, think about his perspective, considering the history between him and Steve. Not that Bill is (or ever will be) a loser from a business perspective, but I can’t help but get the sense that he’s getting that sore loser mentality. Heh. :-D

  13. hello michael, for your last comment, I just say, that’s why many people including me, prefer read your articles that from TUAW, thank you for consider our comments..
