iPhone OS 4.0 – The Folders

I’m an organization junkie. Don’t misread that as that I’m a neat freak, because that’s certainly not the case. But I do want everything in their proper space, and I do believe that things just “belong” in one spot or another.

When it came to the iPhone, I had a difficult time with my organization skills. My home screen carries most of the things I do every day. Facebook, Tweetie 2, Call Wife – apps like that. But hidden in that homepage are a few business related things such as Wells Fargo and Paypal. The next page over is all about office productivity, so I have Quickbooks, and LinkedIn, WordPress, etc. All the fun stuff that I need for my work. Page three is overflow of the productivity page, with apps I need for work, but don’t use that often. Then next four pages list apps in alphabetical order. Then 2 pages of games, and finally one page of apps that I rarely use, but still want on hand.

Thing is, I hate my system. I want my productivity apps on my homepage, but I need space for things like Tweetie 2 that I check daily, but don’t necessarily want taking up space on my homepage’s real estate. Folders is going to change all that, and I love it.

Here’s how it works: Hold your finger down on any app like you’re going to move it. The app starts to jiggle. Then drag it on top of another app and hold it for a second, and the two combine to become a folder. The folder is automatically named based on the category of the apps, but you can rename it if you want. Then when you next want to open an app in the folder, just click on the folder, then into the app you want. You can now hold up to 2,160 apps in each iPhone, instead of the current OS, where you can have just 180. Looks like someone wants more apps to be sold.

This is another one of those genius ideas that really makes using the iPhone more functional, yet at the same time also has that Apple look and feel. If there were no other feature on the iPhone OS, this would be completely worth the upgrade for me alone. I love it.

  1. @TDW…hey…it takes time for perfection…and every time apple has made us wait for something is because they are going to do it right…think about cut, copy & paste…we waited and we were rewarded…same with the Unicorn Tablet…the iPad is a work of art…

as far as the number of apps that can be on the iPhone…you can have as many apps as your phone’s memory can hold…you can only see 180 but you can search for them if you know the apps name you want…and you can organize them using iTunes even tho they are not being seen on the phone…

I’m glad they didn’t allow for more pages and turned to Folders for the answers…because that is one of the biggest things I miss about my jailbreak…is Categories…I miss it…and now I will get an even better version Apple Made…yeah
