iPhone 1.1.1 problems – I’m having them – are you?

October 15, 2007 by Michael 28 Comments

Ever since the iPhone 1.1.1 update, I’ve been having problems with my iPhone. My wife has too. So has Drew from TVJab. That’s officially everyone I know with an iPhone besides you guys. So, it’s time for me to ask – are you having problems with your iPhone?

Here’s what’s happening to us:

Ever since the update, the iPhone has had some real hanging issues. I’ve had to restart the iPhone numerous. As has Drew…as has my wife. So I can tell it’s not an isolated incident. It seems like it might have something to do with the Wi-Fi, but I could be wrong. It seems to have happened to me when the iPhone tries to find Wi-Fi hotspots when I’m out of the house.

Sometimes the phone will freeze up, other times, the internet will just stop working (whether I’m on Edge or a local Wi-Fi Hotspot). The iPhone will have to be restarted before everything works right again.

This is becoming a pretty regular thing with the 3 of us, and I’m starting to get frustrated with it. I’m looking forward to the next update more than ever…mainly because I want this to be fixed. I’m afraid all this “fighting the hackers” mess is causing Apple to rush out updates…and may be causing more problems than its worth.

Why dont you down-grade your firmware? to 1.02.
I don’t see much difference. As I had said my iPhone is unlocked with 1.02 an works just fine for me.The only problem is that I have to unplug the internet if I sync it.Just in case. 😉

According to this recent review they’re currently pretty stable.

    http://www.newgripen.org/tech-and-sport.php/2007/10/15/iphone_review_a_look_ahead_to_the_europe

Then again, it doesn’t say which version of the firmware they tested.

Did you by any chance install any other apps – like Installer.app, SummerBoard etc? I found that 3rd party apps caused some slowdown.

Today I re-did my upgrade using iNdependence 1.2.2 and it seemed to have helped (so far at least) – I also removed SSH when I was done.

I have not installed any 3rd party apps yet so will give it a few days.

I am so tempted to chuckle in an evil way, but I know better then wishing ill to others. I am kind of mad at Apple, and I don’t even have the phone! wth?

my phone has been hanging alot since the upgrade. I may note that prior to the upgrade, I only had about 4GB of data on it. I added some movies right after the upgrade so that took my free space down to like 590MB. It hangs sporaticly, like when i’m multitasking (on the web with music playing or manual update email then go to maps). Its almost like good days and bad days. I even took everything off and re-synced. Seems the same. Occasional hangs.

Nope, none of us have ever installed installer.app or any 3rd party applications.

No problems here… phone is amazing… miss my 3rd party apps.. Sometimes I have had safari quit on me… but I think that has more to do with the porn- I mean the web pages I was trying to load.

I updated my 8G iPhone to 1.1.1 within a day or so after it came out – and so did two of my friends. No problems whatsoever; works like a charm.

The battery seems to last even longer now (that’s my impression: after a recent conference call – starting with an 90% battery – I hung up over 2 hours later and the battery bar had barely nudged to 80% or so. Fantastic!)

No problems here. I keep the ‘automatically find wireless networks’ feature off (since you mention problems when finding wifi)

    Michael,
did you ever find a solution workaround for this, I basically gave up and went back to 1.0.2. Which in my mind is the stable firmware.

My wife and I both have the 8G model and since the updates, we have been experiencing the same problems mentioned and having to reboot at least twice a week. Anyone at apple reading this.

Hello, yes, I am having awful problems with 1.1.1, but not because I installed it: because it will not install at all. I guess I should be glad. I would be, except for every time I do try to install it, my phone has to be totall restored and I lose my date (3x now). Apple has been no help; I guess I will have to break down and go to the Apple Store again. This is so aggravating.

I really regret getting an iPhone now. I should have known that getting the Swiss Army Knife of phones would be a silly idea. Still, if it actually worked flawlessly, it would be wonderful.

    Sigh.

I thought it’s only me. After the upgrade to 1.1.1, it hangs sporadically. It specially hangs at Starbucks, and most other public wi-fi where it needs confirmation to continue. I just turn off the wi-fi before getting to Starbucks, and it works like charm. Buggy firmware upgrade; I think may be Apple already aware of it, but can’t do much about it, as releasing another firmware would put them in bigger mess of iBricking.
I have no hack, no third party app.

i have been having nasty issues with my iPhone since upgrading to 1.1.1. i just hacked it, so i assumed it was that, but after reading that others have been having the problem too, i’m not sure what to do about it.

my phone has been hanging a lot, specifically when using the iPod (in addition to anything else, eg iPod + safari, iPod + mail, etc), or the iTunes music store, or even sometimes just safari.

you think apple will release a fix any time soon? it’s really starting to bug me

I’m having the same issues. I will be downgrading. It’s dissapointing to see apple behaving like Microsoft. Releasing upgrades that aren’t stable just to keep 3rd party developers out.

I’m having hanging issues since going from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2. Mostly I notice it in the Email. I click into Email, it hangs with a white screen, then goes back to the main menu after 30 (or 60) seconds. Pressing the menu button will not take me to the menu until that time interval is up. Several attempts later it works fine, then doesn’t again etc. Sometimes misc buttons don’t activate when I press them. Unhacked.

    Happens to me manytimes
freez for few sec then go to main menu
then refreez and go to slide to unlock
    screen
if it freez for long time you cab do soft reset
Press power and the square together
for 15 sec it will restart it again

Or if start freezing and cane back disable wifi and enable it
can solve the problem for while
hope that new update can fix that

    Hey Puneet / Avnash.
My phone too hung today on the mail screen. restarted it. works now.
Try restarting the phone by holding the home screen and standby buttons for more than 10 seconds

    Hey Puneet/Avinash

I faced the same prob as yours. Like Vijay mentioned, I kept the standby button pressed for more than 10 secs and it restarted. If that doesn’t work hold the standby as well as home button together for more than 10-15 secs. Thanks Vijay!
