5 MUST HAVE iPhone Accessories

When the iPhone launches in June of this year, there will be dozens of accessories available from a variety of companies. I’ve been thinking about the different type of accessories you could create for the iPhone, and have composed this list (complete with mock-ups) of 5 that I think are must-haves.

Mobile Charger (Battery Back-up)iphone_backup.jpg
With only 5 hours of talk/video playback time, the iPhone isn’t going to make it on a long trip or flight. This mobile charger would recharge your iPhone on the plane, in your car, or in your hand, and give you another 5 hours of talk/video playback time before you need to dock or plug into the wall.
Bluetooth Earbuds + headsetiphone_earbuds.jpg
Bluetooth Earbuds would be awesome…but I don’t think you could just have Earbuds by themselves, because they would be so small, you’d be sure to lose at least one of them.

I like the headset that we’ve seen on the iPhone official site, but I’d like to see a small cord go from it to another earbud so you could be fully immersed in your music.

Horizontal Dockiphone_horizontal.jpg
Again, addressing the battery issue. I watch and listen to podcasts all day when I’m at work, and 5 hours just isn’t going to cut it. With a horizontal dock the iPhone could be charging while I’m watching movies, TV or podcasts in the “widescreen” mode.
Flip Caseiphone_flip.jpg
We’re going to have to do something about keeping that screen safe, and I’m not exactly sure how they’re going to make cases for the iPhone that do that, since you have to touch the screen with your finger to make it work. So, when thinking about this, I looked at my favorite iPod case, Griffin’s Centerstage, and decided it might work to use the same flip-style design, but increase it’s size to allow the flip portion to flip all the way around to the back.
iGloveiphone_iglove.jpg
Ok, now stick with me on this…it gets cold during the winter…and I don’t know about you, but I want to wear gloves when it’s cold. The problem is that the iPhone only responds to the touch of your finger. You can’t use your fingernail, so I’m assuming that a gloved hand won’t work either (if I’m wrong I’m sure the comments below will correct me)…with that in mind, I want a pair of gloves with a small hole in the pointer finger so that the phone will work, and you’ll still be able to keep your hands mostly warm.

So…what do you think? Agree? Disagree? Leave your comments below to let me know how stupid I am…

  1. I’m guessing the “touch” just have to conduct electricity like skin. So the tips of the iGlove could be just some conductive material. Or the tips should have properties like the skin at the tips of your fingers, so it can still keep your finger tips warm.

I would add to the flip case a transparent flexible rubber-ish thing that acts as a keyboard. Kind of like a membrane keyboard. So when you want to use the touch-screen keyboard, you can slap the transparent keyboard on top and type with tactile feedback. Of course, the side of the keyboard that touches the screen would have to emulate your finger tips. How does that sound?

  2. There already is 1 if not 2 companies making “iGloves”. As well as a company that makes a 16 hour (I believe) battery add-on for video iPods, and another company with stereo bluetooth headsets for mp3 music listening. You guys really need to get out more 🙂

I am hoping that one of the companies making wearable iPod controllers is able to add some functionality for the iPhone as well. That would be sweet.

  3. Joe –

I am aware that some of these already exist for video iPods…but the iGloves I’m talking about don’t, and the stereo head phones don’t have a headset for accepting calls. 😛

  4. Surely a glove with an electrically conductive material (say a plastic metal compound) coated on the end of one finger would be better? Look a little less like a glove with a hole in it, too! 😀

  5. During my time in the Arctic we had gloves that were called trigger finger, which exposed, obviously your trigger finger. That would work for me.
Also, many of the gloves I see people wearing these days have the fingers exposed and just a mitten cap that goes over them. Many of the phone text kids wear them.
Finally, most of the gloves I own have some exposed areas of the fingers worn into them anyway!

I like the idea of the flip case. Been thinking about that protection since I first saw the iPhone, I had something similar back with my Palm3.

We will surely see all and many more of the ideas mentioned, I think the iPhone will open up another cottage industry, like the iPod did, for it’s accessories.

  6. I also think the iGlove is a great idea. My first concern was how it could end up looking like an old, torn glove instead of an accessory for the latest phone. But then i thought about it and maybe if the holes are small enough that they are not noticeable, it might work just fine, and also improve accuracy when typing. Still, it would be better if it’s some kind of conductive material.
