iPad Tacoma Install Complete

Table of Contents

A few months back, we told you about a shop that was installing an iPad into a Tacoma, and it turns out they finally got the job done. In watching the series, you can see that there were a few different issues with the install, mostly in sound quality. It turns out that when you’d pause the iPad, a horrible hissing sound would come out through the system. They’ve figured out that problem, but it took some custom work to get it done.

I love cars, and I love seeing custom work like this. I don’t think an iPad in the dash is the most practical thing for everybody, but it sure is cool to see.

More importantly, this is an important step in the world of custom cars. For years, people have been installing stereo systems with some form of security system built in, from the pull-out deck to removable faces. But if the entire system goes with you everywhere – as I assume it would have to be in these installs – then not only is there nothing to steal but you can have music and video in one unit. And at $599 for the base model, it’s still cheaper than most in-dash DVD players, which run up to $1000 for a deck of any quality.

Innovators get things done and I, for one, applaud these guys.

  1. I wonder why the iHaters say the iPad is a useless toy. It seems pretty versatile to me when used in various applications.

  2. Needs a bit of work to ease the docking. I wonder if someone could come up with induction charging and a wireless link to the speakers.

Love the attempt, my concern here in my very humid and hot area are the rated operational temperatures of the iPad. I would make it easy to take out, because after a day in a hot car it may refuse to start in order to preserve itself.

    Very very impressive though.
