Want a 27-inch iMac? The Wait is Actually Not That Bad

If there’s one piece of Apple pr0n that I’m a big fan of, it’s the 27-inch iMac. Sure, it’s had some problems, but that mammoth screen and equally large hard drive just calls to me like a siren in the night. A large, aluminum and glass siren.

To recap, a month ago, Apple was pushing back the shipping times on the 27-incher to 3 weeks. Then, Apple was starting to refund money to those who had purchased the desktop computer and had experienced problems. I was pretty sure that this was going to be a problem for the future that wasn’t going to get fixed easily.

Well, I guess I was wrong, because the Apple store is currently showing ship times as 5-7 days. Sure, it’s not 24 hours like the 21.5 model, but I’ll take the extra time for an extra-awesome Mac. Now the big question is whether or not the problems have been solved. If you’ve got one on order, let us know in the comments box how it goes.

  1. I’m interested in those comments too. I’ve been holding off ordering one, as has my son. Both of us skeptical of the cracking/yellowing/shading 27″ screen & other well blogged user problems.

  2. I ordered one about 3 weeks ago from B & H Photo. It shipped the next day and is absolutely perfect. I got the i7 model as I tend to keep my computers for at least 5 years. No problems at all. Just a simply massive screen to get used to . . .

  3. How’s availability at the Apple Retail Stores?

I got my 27″ i5 model on the day after Thanksgiving at my local Apple store and it’s worked like a charm. I didn’t want to get the i7 because I’d heard of the troubles via mail order and think it’s always easier to deal with the stores. I also had them upgrade the memory to 8GB so I knew they would have to check out my unit beforehand. Bought it and it’s worked perfectly since. Only complaint is battery life of the mouse (the keyboard’s isn’t that bad).

Summary: The display is stunning, it’s wicked fast and you will love it! I have had no issues at all with the screen or anything else. It does get hot enough to cook eggs on the top, but it’s no worse than a MacBook Pro.

I was going to wait for a Macbook Pro with the 17″ display and the i5/7 but I’ve done a lot of things with it that would have been a huge strain with my old computer, and so I’m very glad I got it.
