Rumor has it that Foxconn, one of the China-based manufacturers is assembling the new iPad 3 and that it will begin shipping in roughly a month and a half. With huge demand for Apple’s iDevices around the world, it seems that only China can accomodate this massive scale and deliver iPad after iPad to the wanting public.

I myself have an iPad 2, alongside other Apple devices and I really do admit that I’ve been lured both by the amazing hardware and software integration as well as Steve Jobs’ charisma during his famous keynotes. As I admire the iPad 2′s lovely craftsmanship (I run my fingers through its near-sharp edges), I can’t help but feel that this is all smoke and mirrors, knowing that right now, a Foxconn employee is on a 36-hour shift finishing a similar product that will be shipped halfway around the globe.

Smoke and mirrors. That’s what it is. Beyond Apple’s famous commercial to break conformity, in another part of the globe the very same products are being manufactured by people who could have very well fit into the “Big Brother” commercial from the 80′s. And asking Siri doesn’t help. If you ask her where she’s made, she will tell you that’s classified information. Sure we all know she’s made in China, but the AI seems to be telling us something deeper. That something is going on inside Foxconn’s closed doors: The long hours. Suicides. Not getting paid. Depression.

And we’re not just talking about Apple, but outsourced technology in general. Microsoft’s XBOX is also manufactured by Foxconn. And it isn’t just China. It’s just that, well, the iPad is really nice.

In metaphysics, we learn that the “good” tends to spread itself and as a point of causality, something that is “good” must have come from a similar source. But as I browse through the many articles and photos of Apple’s outsource hub, the world starts to make less and less sense. Where people from around the world get to revel in such amazing technology, while sacrificing the lives of nearly half a million workers in China.

So you’re a college student, and you need to buy the perfect computer for your 4 years of higher education. What will you go with? Mac or PC? Apple or Dell? Shiny, clean design, or cheap and fast?

When I was in college I went with the PC – it’s what I grew up with, what I was familiar with. But I had an iPod, an iPhone and any other Apple gadget I could get my hands on, and I lusted after all the coffee shop lurkers that had their Macs out in front of them doing work. But that doesn’t mean that Apple products don’t have their downsides.

The most obvious one? Cost. The base price of the Apple desktop is over $2,000. For that price you could get the one of the fastest PC’s on the market and probably a few additional screens if you’re a multi-tasker (or a gamer).

At the same time – Macs have only recently begun gaining market share, which means that most viruses are built and geared towards PC. So while getting a Mac does not mean you’re insulated from all viruses, it’s much less likely, and therefore, it’s less likely that you’ll get the (mac version of the) blue screen of death. Which is always one of the worst moments in the world, when you realize your entire life, for some people, is completely wiped. My advice – always back up your hard drive. Just do it.

Yet for the additional cost that you’re forking over for an Apple branded product, you’re getting the support and the culture of the Apple brand as well as the shiny, clean design. I’m a sucker for design – if you didn’t have any idea. Even with the recent resignation of Steve Jobs, the Apple culture (or cult, depending on how you look at the situation) will continue to go strong. Look at how quickly iPods became the norm, and became synonyms for ‘mp3 player’ in the general public of the US. And look how quickly iPads are taking over the tablet market. And see how quickly rumors spread about new Apple products.

The cult of Mac isn’t going anywhere soon – and with it you get a whole crowd of enthusiastic peers – and the great service of Apple employees. Does Dell have a Genius Bar? Nope. Another one of the big sellers for Apple branded products is the OS. As of September 2011, the OS is Lion – very clean and intuitive, and the multi-gesture trackpad on laptops seems like something out of a future movie like I, Robot or Minority Report. Though you can install the OS on non-Apple branded computers, and you can install the Windows system on a Mac, honestly, who would want to do either of those? With the former, you’d lose the clean lines of Apple design and the immediate envy that rises in your friend when they see that glowing apple on the front of your computer, and with the latter you’d lose the intuitive nature of the Mac OS. Either way, somehow, you lose. Either go full out Mac or go full out PC.

There’s no room on the fence when it comes to computers, at least not in today’s world. But my opinion. Take your money and go to your nearest Apple store. Especially as a young college student, you’ll earn the jealous stares of your colleagues and you can be very well protected – if you pick up an Apple Care protection plan your computer will be safe no matter what happens to it. Cherish your shiny Mac, laptop or desktop. Join the cult.

As the crew at Apple enjoys its 35th year of creating amazing products, the clever team at Think Geek has unveiled its own April Fools related Apple Gag: The Playmobile Apple Store.

While not as popular as Lego, the Playmobil version of the popular Apple Store is still amazing and could pass as a real product to unsuspecting parents. The store includes a keynote Theater, Genius Bar, Kid’s Corner and display tables decked out with iPhones and iMacs. The fake set retails for $179.99 and can be ‘upgraded’ with an optional line pack for $49.99 to create your own Apple product launch:

So when we spotted this amazing Apple Store Playset from PLAYMOBILâ„¢ we were admittedly in a bit of a conundrum. On the one hand, it’s a product designed for children much younger than ourselves. On the other hand, it’s a tiny representation of the store which sells us all the shiny Apple goodies we can’t resist. Then we noticed that the PLAYMOBILâ„¢ iStore includes amazingly tiny iPhones, Macbooks, and iPads. Our resolve began to waver. A quick peek at the miniature Genius Bar and we were feeling a bit woozy. Then we saw the tiny Steve Jobs presenting in the Keynote Theater on the top floor and that was it. Our wallets popped out faster than you can say Jonathan Ive and we plunked down whatever money was needed to own this amazing playset.

Over the weekend AT&T announced it will buy T-Mobile for $39 Billion in cash and stocks to create the largest GSM carrier in the US. What does it mean for iPhone users? Nothing now but the future is going to be a lot bigger.

AT&T + T-Mobile = AT&T-Mobile

AT&T acquiring T-Mobile surprised many: a merger of this scale came out of nowhere and creates a GSM monopoly in the US. The merger has T-Mobile customers wondering about the fate of their service, handsets and whether they will get the iPhone. To answer the million dollar question: yes and no. The iPhone will not come to T-Mobile for a long time. The merger has only been initiated and has many hurdles to jump. Frequency differences also prevent the iPhone from using 3G and would only be truly compatible when a 4G LTE model is announced.

However, its not all good news according to Forrester research analyst Charles Golvin

“AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile, if approved, brings good news and bad news. The good news: high-speed mobile broadband service will improve in quality and coverage, including — in the long run — those in rural communities outside the reach of terrestrial broadband today. The bad news: the cost of that service won’t come down nearly as fast as customers would like, since AT&T and Verizon Wireless combined would own nearly three out of every four wireless subscriptions in the US. While clearly troublesome for Sprint and other mobile smaller mobile competitors, It’s also bad news for cable operators, whose incipient mobility products will suffer in comparison to what AT&T and Verizon can offer.”

It’s All About The G’s – 4G LTE

Besides becoming the biggest GSM carrier in the US, AT&T and T-Mobile have a lot to offer, namely 4G LTE. AT&T’s 4G rollout has been slow when compared to Verizon’s expansive coverage. T-Mobile on the other hand wants to push 4G hard, but doesn’t have the resources to do so fast enough. A merger would give the new company a dramatically larger footprint: 294 million people. T-Mobile’s towers will be repurposed to use 4G LTE which is the upgrade path both carriers are following.

A Year In The Making

Despite AT&T’s announcing a merger with T-Mobile, nothing will come to fruition for a year at least. However, some fallout is expected. AT&T (1900/850 MHz) and T-Mobile (AWS 1700/2100 MHz) use different incompatible frequencies for 3G coverage. This would render almost all T-Mobile phones useless on AT&T’s 3G network. As you start thinking about buying a new phone and planning a doomsday scenario for your device, don’t worry.

Any spectrum change wouldn’t happen for a year at least meaning your phone will work for the next 12-months as it does today. The day a spectrum shift occurs, AT&T is already planning on making your T-Mobile phone compatible:

That would leave current T-Mobile phones without 3G. They would need to be replaced with phones that use AT&T’s 3G frequencies. Ralph de la Vega, AT&T’s head of wireless and consumer services, said this will happen as part of the normal phone upgrade process.

It’s safe to say that a 4G phone will be the most compatible but buying one right now isn’t future proofing you. Wait until push comes to shove and invest in a better 4G phone when your plan allows for it.

Following the iPad 2′s debut, rumors have shifted to the iPhone 5 which hint at a metal back and a large edge-to-edge display.

Metal Back

The iPhone 5′s design isn’t expected to change dramatically except for the back plate. A prototype at a Foxconn plant has been making rounds and one source talked with 9 To 5 Mac about the phone’s backing. The source said Apple would ditch the glass back found on the iPhone 5 and opt for metal. Issues with painting the glass white and scratches by iPhone owners were cited as the reason for a metal back by another Chinese Source:

According to a Chinese source, Apple is changing the rear part of iPhone 5 to aluminum which was used for first iPhone’s instead of glass or might adopt the design similar to iPod touch 4G, after facing lots of issues with white paint and scratches on rear glass surface, reported Taiwan’s Economic Daily News.

As of now it’s unknown if Apple will actually opt for metal over aluminum. Crafting the iPhone 5′s back out of aluminum would be a step back in the device’s design timeline — something Apple has very rarely done with any product — bringing its appearance closer to the original iPhone.

Metal would be a much more likely material as aluminum would require a plastic cover on the antenna to prevent signal loss. The iPhone 4 already has its antennas exposed and on the side making the case for aluminum arguable but from a design standpoint it would simply be a step backward. Metal is the more logical decision – it’s stronger and easier to color than glass.

A Potentially Larger Screen

One of the more prevalent rumors is the iPhone 5 sporting a larger edge-to-edge screen. The screen size is unknown but purported to be 4″ to compete with the larger Android phones on the market such as the Galaxy S and LG’s Optimus. However, the 4″ screen size is just an estimate.

Using a physically larger screen would present a number of problems such as changing the iPhone’s form factor, increasing the resolution to retain Retina Display status and thus frustrating developers who must rewrite their Apps to account for a resolution bump. Technically Apple could get away with using the same 960 x 480 resolution to still retain Retina Display status. However, the lowered Pixel Per Inch count would prevent Apple from labeling the iPhone 5′s screen a true Retina Display as it must be 300 PPI or higher.

Apple has touted its newest case-turned-cover which puts the iPad 2 to sleep and wakes when opened. I originally guessed the magic behind Smart Covers was the use of multiple proximity sensors yet it turns out I’m wrong – magnets make the magic happen.

IFixit took a stab (literally) at ripping the iPad’s Smart Cover to shreds to discover what really makes it work. The team found no less than 31 magnets that align the cover, snap it in to place and sleep the iPad. 10 magnets are found inside the iPad and the remaining 21 in the cover.

The iFixt team thought the Smart Cover’s magnets had special properties such as the complex field of patterns found in correlated magnets but turned out to be of the generic -/+ variety. One magnet in the cover is used to trigger the iPad’s sleep sensor which tells the tablet when it should wake and unlock or go back in to sleep mode. The Smart Cover’s remaining 20 magnets are used to form the triangular shape that helps prop the iPad for typing or watching video.

What’s interesting is Apple’s preference to use the much weaker steel-to-magnet bond hence the need for more magnets. To ensure the Smart Cover always lines up in the right way, the iPad has a row of alternating + and – magnets that match the cover’s + and – magnets. This makes it very difficult to put the cover on the wrong way.

It has been rumored for some time the iPhone 5 would receive a much faster processor that would be on the same level as the iPad. Las week’s announcement the A5 CPU would be powering the iPad 2 has sparked rumors it would also power the next generation iPhone. This rumor has been confirmed by iClarified.

Sifting through the newest SDK of iOS 4.3 revealed the iPhone’s support for a CPU titled the ‘S5L8940′. Independent research by a developer and hacker namedChronic shows the iPad 2 is powered by the ‘S5L8940′ CPU which in reality is the Dual Core A5 CPU:

iPad2,1 (K93AP) = WiFi.

iPad2,2 (K94AP) = GSM.

iPad2,3 (K95AP) = CDMA.
The A5 Processor, is called a ‘S5L8940′

In addition to a confirmed rumor the iPhone 5 will have a much faster processor is news Apple will be doubling the storage in the next generation phone. The current iPhone and iPod Touch top out at 32 and 64 GBs of storage respectively. The former has enough room for one flash chip while the later can fit two. Apple may have found a flash memory supplier than can create a single 64 GB chip.

Cult Of Mac</a received photos of a prototype iPhone 4 sporting 64 GBs of storage and could tentatively confirm it was legitimate. While the back of the device shows the capacity as being "XX GB" the amount of free & used space for iOS matches that of a 64 GB iPad.

Here’s how Smart Covers really work.

Months before the iPad 2′s debut Apple released Betas of iOS 4.3 to developers. Journalists and developers sifted through the Beta releases and found hints of PhotoBooth, FaceTime, Retina support, and new touch gestures. Code for an iPad proximity sensor was discovered and is what makes Smart Covers, well, smart.

The proximity sensor can detect how far or how close an object is to the iPad like the iPhone which shuts of the display when held against a face. When the iPad’s screen is covered, the device enters sleep mode and locks. Once the cover is removed, the iPad wakes. Using proximity sensors would allow the iPad to recognize when the Smart Cover is open or closed.

It’s likely Apple incorporated multiple proximity sensors to prevent users from accidentally locking their iPad when holding it. The iPad 2 would need at least three proximity sensors to detect the presence of a smart cover. If one or two had been used, someone holding their iPad could accidentally sleep the device if their hands covered the sensors. Three sensors — one on the top, bottom and right side — would prevent accidentally locking the iPad’s screen yet allow the device to sleep when a Smart Cover blocks all three sensors.

A mockup of the proximity sensors in the iPad 2. Image via Engadget.

Waking the iPad 2 using a Smart Cover would only require the right proximity sensor be uncovered to wake the iPad. The other two would be a safe-gaurd as the user would only be able to block two sensors at most. Once the third is covered, the iPad can go to sleep. As soon as the cover is removed, the iPad wakes.

The design lines up with rumors that the next generation tablet will sport a FaceTime camera, improved speaker and tapered edges.

The rendering which has been hyped up Blogs as being a leak of the iPad 2 is thought to be the creation of an Apple fan. The supposed fan created mockup takes design cues from third party case manufacturers and other rumors. The design looks similar to the leaked shell that popped up at CES earlier this year.

May Come In White

There have been rumors the iPad 2 may have a Carbon Fiber shell but the Aluminum design is likely to stay for another generation. Apple may introduce a white iPad 2 despite the problem with releasing the white iPhone 4. 9 to 5 Mac obtained an image of the iPad 2′s digitizer and bezel in white. An opening at the bezel’s top fits a FaceTime Camera.

Apple has received much criticism for delaying the white iPhone 4 but could have better success with the iPad 2. Combining a white bezel and Aluminum back would reduce potential light leakage. However, a prominent white border surrounding the iPad’s screen would dramatically reduce contrast making the device unusable for long periods due to eye strain. Images would be perceived as brighter and washed out.

The latest developer preview of Mac OS X Lion introduces TRIM support for Solid State Drives which will improve long term performance.

Apple is starting to add SSDs to the MacBook Pro line and eventually its desktop Macs to improve battery life and shorten boot up times. However, Snow Leopard can’t optimally handle the drives. All versions of OS X treat SSDs as a Hard Disk Drive when deleting a file or formating the drive. SSDs function differently than HDDs and must erase data before new data can be written. HDDs on the other hand can write data over old data without the need to erase.

Treating a SSD in this way will degrade performance over time as the drive’s flash cells are unnecessarily taxed and will wear out after a certain amount of read/write cycles. TRIM doesn’t wear out SSDs and deletes data in a far more efficient way. Apple has implemented TRIM support in the newest developer preview of OS X Lion but is limited to drives Apple has shipped with a Mac. TRIM support means the SSD in a MacBook Air can last longer and won’t ear out due to unnecessary data erase commands.

French Apple news site Hardmac shows that OS X’s system profiler add TRIM support.

Yesterday Apple announced its refreshed line of MacBook Pros sporting the latest Sandybridge processors and AMD graphics processors complimented by Intel’s integrated graphics chip. However, the baseline MacBook Pro lacks a discrete GPU and is powered by Intel’s HD 3000. While some are decrying Apple for intentionally ditching Nvidia for Intel, the constraints of the 13″ MacBook Pro forced Apple’s hand.

During the previous MacBook Pro revision Apple upgraded the 15 and 17-inch models with Intel’s Core i5 and i7 processors while sticking with the Core 2 Duo for the 13-inch MacBook Pro. The reason was frustrating; Nvidia’s 320M GPU gave the low end MacBook Pro its graphics kick and acted as a chipset for Intel’s Core 2 processors. This allowed Apple to shrink the size of the logic board in favor or a larger battery.

Intel eventually introduced its newest line of processors to succeed the Core 2 line dubbed Core i3, i5 and i7. However, Intel ran in to legal issues with Nvidia and blocked them from making chipsets for the newest line of processors. Intel and Nvidia’s heated legal battle which started in directly effected Apple. For Apple to continue using Nvidia’s GPU and chipset combo, Intel’s newest Core i5 processors could not be used.

Skipping Intel’s Sandybridge CPUs and sticking with a slightly faster Core 2 processor combined with an Nvidia 320 or 330M GPU would have been a bad move by Apple. However, the design constraints of the 13-inch MacBook Pro meant Apple couldn’t include a discrete GPU and was forced to use a chipset/GPU combination. The ultimate result is Intel’s HD 3000 which can barely go toe-to-toe with Nvidia’s lower end 310M and 320M GPU and has some questioning whether a Mac with integrated graphics can be really be a pro level machine.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro’s space constraints, Nvidia’s inability to create a compatible chipset/GPU combo and Apple’s reluctance to skip over Sandybridge CPUs led to Intel HD 3000 powering the baseline MacBook Pro.

High-Speed Data Transfer

Thunderbolt is being billed by Apple and Intel as the successor to USB 3.0, Firewire and other high-speed data transfer protocols. The two companies have been developing the technology for the past two years and the first version of Thunderbolt can support speeds of up to 10Gbps which is twice as fast as USB 3.0, four times faster than Express Card, more than 12 times faster than FireWire 800 and 20 times faster than USB 2.0. The great thing about Thunderbolt is the ability to daisy chain compatible devices which can send and receive data over two 10Gbps channels ensuring a consistent data speed. Thunderbolt is based on PCI Express which means the only data transfer bottlenecks you run in to will be your Hard Drive and anything connected via USB, FireWire or eSata.

One Cable To Rule Them All

Thunderbolt picks up where USB left off – ubiquitous support – and streamlines every connector and every cable in to one. Since Thunderbolt can transport massive amounts of data at such high speeds, it can support simultaneous connections to FireWire, USB and eSata devices. The more practical uses of Thunderbolt for consumers who don’t need high-speed data transfer speeds will likely be hubs that connect your hard drive, display, printer and other equipment. These hubs can be integrated in to a display or simply be one cable with a multitude of connectors. The potential of Thunderbolt will allow Apple to remove USB, Ethernet, audio in/out and Firewire ports while still supporting them through adapters and hubs. The upside is a thinner, lighter Mac.

Practical Uses Of Thunderbolt

If you connect your display using a Mini DisplayPort cable, Thunderbolt is compatible with your hardware. The first wave of devices that take advantage of Thunderbolt will be high-end servers, disk arrays and soon hubs that connect every device you own. If you’re a professional, you’ll be excited to know that high-capacity disk arrays offered by Pegasus and LaCie are now Thunderbolt compatible which will speed up your workflow dramatically.

You may want to wait.

MacRumors points to evidence from resellers that their stocks of 15 and 17-inch MacBook Pros are running low. Amazon reports a 1 to 2 month delay on 17-inch MacBook Pros while Apple retains a shipping status of “within 24 hours.”

Low product supplies have been the biggest indicators from retail channels that a new model will be announced from Apple. While the smaller 13-inch MacBook Pro hasn’t experienced the same supply shortages, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple updated the entire family to Intel’s Sandy Bridge Architecture.

The upside to having Intel’s integrated graphics on the same CPU die is that Apple can finally bring graphics switching to the 13-inch MacBook Pro. The current iteration uses an aging Core 2 Duo processor coupled with an Nvidia GeForce 320M GPU with no room in the case for another chip. An updated model could use a newer ATI or Nivida GPU with either an Intel Core i3 or i5 CPU.

We’ve reported about what the next generation family of MacBook Pros could look like. Apple will most likely outfit each model with an Intel Sandy Bridge CPU which would require a drastic change in the underlying design. The switch would bring Intel’s integrated graphics to the same CPU die. While efficient and power saving, Apple will need to supplement the lack of graphics horsepower with either an Nvida or ATI processor.

Apple also made hints recently at where the MacBook Pro line could go. During Apple’s most recent earnings call, Tim Cook said “The MacBook of the future, shipping today.” It could mean a multitude of things but for one I see solid state storage becoming the norm along with the death of the optical drive.

One emerging section of third party iOS accessories has been musical instruments. The latest comes from Akai and turns your iPad in to a full fledged synthesizer.

The Akai SynthStation is a synthesizer sporting 49 keys and can be controlled by any iOS App that supports CoreMidi. The iPad is docked in an adjustable cradle and includes a 1/4″ headphone jack.

The Akai SynthStation Specs

-Portable, velocity-sensitive keyboard with pitch and modulation wheels.
-Nine velocity-sensitive MPC-style drum pads which light when triggered.
-Dedicated transport control buttons including Play, Pause and Record.
-Play MIDI keyboard and drum pad performances into an iPad via CoreMIDI or AkaiConnect apps.
-Built-in, adjustable dock charges your iPad while positioning the screen at the perfect angle.
-USB port for connecting to a Mac or PC, receiving power and controlling MIDI music software.
-Professional ¼” stereo outputs with volume control to connect.
mixers, speakers and recording equipment.
-Headphone output to practice and compose in private.

The Akai SynthStation does away with a lot of the internal Hardare and relies on an iOS App to generate sounds. Essentially, this is an iPad dock with a keyboard attached but any App that utilizes Core MIDI unlocks the SynthStation’s potential while cutting down the price.

Apple enabled MIDI support in iOS 4.2 which allows MIDI commands to be sent over USB using the camera connection kit (iPad only) or Wifi.

I’m not a musician but the newest iOS Apps or accessories that turn an iPad into a professional music creator simply amaze me.

Engadget has a hands on with the keyboard at NAMM

But what about the iPad? Will a CDMA version of the device exist? According to Verizon, it will.

A quote from Verizon’s CFO Francis Shammo to Business Week confirms the carrier will have a CDMA iPad.

Verizon will get an embedded chip in the iPad for use on its network, Francis Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc., the parent of the wireless unit, said today in an interview in New York. IPad users currently need an extra device to connect to Verizon’s network.

Unfortunately, Francis nor Verizon gave anymore information on the CDMA iPad. Will it support LTE or 3G? LTE would be likely as the iPad has more space inside to accommodate a bulkier radio. Tim Cook had said the reason for LTE’s absence from the iPhone 4 was due to design restrictions Apple did not want to make.

It’s important to note that the iPad 2 is coming soon and would come in a CDMA flavor if Verizon is carrying the tablet. It wouldn’t make sense for Verizon to carry the first generation iPad unless it will still be sold by Apple alongside the newest iPad just as it does with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

While Verizon sells the iPad in its retail stores, it doesn’t have a cellular radio that connects to its network. Instead it uses WiFi to connect to a MiFi base station on Verizon’s 3G network.

But is unlimited really just that? You may not want to celebrate about the Verizon bound iPhone so fast.

Right now the iPhone and iPad on AT&T are capped at 2 GBs (something I’ve personally wrestled with as I hit 2 GBs in 2 weeks) per month of data usage. Verizon’s data plan offers an “unlimited” soft cap of 5GB which was the same as AT&T’s previous plan. If, and this is hopeful thinking, an LTE version of the iPhone 4 were to be announced, the data cap would big a much larger concern. Data tests done by PC Mag have shown that LTE subscribers can blaze through the 5GB cap in as little as 32 minutes. While it’s a very extreme example of non-everyday use, the test highlights that low data caps and high bandwidth connections do not mix.

Verizon is also considering moving to AT&T’s style of data caps and has hinted at doing so since last summer. While it hasn’t come to fruition, it is a measure the carrier could take to ensure the network is running optimally for all subscribers. Considering Verizon is now the largest US carrier, a data cap doesn’t seem unlikely.

AT&T has been the scorn of many iPhone users for dropped calls and spotty coverage. Many have hoped that Verizon would carry the iPhone and we’re closing in on a major announcement this Tuesday which is expected to be the iPhone coming to Verizon. However, depending on what iteration iPhone Verizon gets, it may not be as unlimited as you think.

Despite being followed up by Macworld, a large number of Apple accessory makers showcase their latest products at the event. However, one accessory maker gave Mashable a sneak peak at the iPad 2 instead of just a case rendering.

iPad 2 Displayed At CES?

The iPad 2 is expected to launch or at least be announced soon and already case mockups have been making their rounds on the Internet. The most concrete evidence we’ve seen of the iPad 2′s near final design was at GoPod Mobile’s display at CES. Charlie White from Mashable found a back cover of the iPad 2 allegedly sent to the company by Apple to use for case design. The cover lines up with rumors the iPad 2 will have a back facing camera and larger speaker. The cover also has tapered edges like similar to the iPod Touch as hinted by several rumors.

The iCADE – Every Retro Gamers’ Excuse To Now Buy An iPad

The iCADE is a rather interesting accessory that appeals to every old school gamer. If the name hasn’t given it away, the iCADE designed by the creative folks at ION Audio and first unveiled by Think Geek on April 1st is a miniature gaming cabinet for the iPad.

The iCade comes with a typical arcade style joystick and buttons the connect to the iPad over Bluetooth and can control several retro style iPad games being released by Atari. The cabinet won’t be arriving until Spring and will be priced at $99.

The iPhone and Verizon have a long and storied history. As soon as the iPhone was announced on Cingular (then AT&T after a merger), rumors swirled the phone would come to Verizon. After 4 years and millions of iPhones sold, Verizon is holding an event January 11th – could the iPhone 4 be coming a CDMA flavor?

The invite, published by All Things D and Macrumors was sent to prominent Apple bloggers and journalists.

The timing of the event falls in line with a mandate Apple sent retail employees asking them not to take a vacation for three weeks starting at the end of January. It is unknown if Steve Jobs will join the stage with Verizon president and COO Lowell McAdam

There are other clues pointing towards Apple’s involvement and possibly Steve Jobs’ attendance. Gizmodo, which allegedly has a great relationship with Verizon was not sent an invite.

Here’s what’s key: We’re great friends with Verizon. (Hi guys!) We’ve worked with them for years, and we’ve been to like every event they’ve had over the last three years. We haven’t gotten an invite. Which is weird. We’ve reached out to Verizon to see why, exactly, we weren’t invited, but we’ve gotten no comment yet. (Update: Verizon’s official response is a big ol’ no comment.)

My Support Profile is available to any Apple customer who have registered their product with the company – just log in with your Apple ID as you would the iTunes Store. You can view the serial number and other detailed information of the Apple product you own. What’s great about your support profile is the integration with Apple’s Voice Pass system as the two combined will fast-track your calls through Apple’s support line as it will know why you’re calling what product you’re having an issue with.

You can also give any device from an iPod to iMac a nickname to help differentiate multiple, registered entries. If your product isn’t listed, it’s extremely easy to add and register it through Apple’s web interface.

It’s great having incidents, reports and repairs on file in a very accessible online interface. If you’re thinking about selling an iDevice, you can show those interested the warranty information, which repairs it has had and whether it has been replaced. Also having this data at your fingertips will make most users lives a lot easier when trying to receive support for their problems.

Many people start the new year off with a few resolutions (my personal resolution being 720p – I see an AppleTV coming soon) but I’m more interested in looking at the potential in tech companies, mainly Apple. What’s in store for us as consumers in 2011? My personal hope is the death of the optical drive.

In the past year it’s been more of a wish than a claim that can be backed up with solid evidence. However, Apple is in a position to kill off the optical drive in a very anticlimactic way to which I say “off with its lens!”

No Optical Drive Means A Slimmer, Lighter Mac

Say the day comes when Apple starts phasing out the optical drive — which would come with protests as it should from those who use discs — what would it mean for the Mac? Steve Jobs has said that Blu-Ray is a bag of hurt, and Apple doesn’t seem likely to incorporate it any time soon considering the heavy push on iTunes.

It would mean a slimmer Mac. Look at the MacBook Air, it needed every last inch of space it could grab to achieve its thin design and long battery life. There would be a lot more space for Apple to expand the battery give the smaller MacBook Pro more wiggle room for extra chipsets. Not only could space be better utilized but the overall weight of the machine would be reduced which is sure to entice Apple.

However, he benefits would be greater on the MacBook line than the iMac or Mac Pro but the Mac Mini could have the optical slot occupied by an extra Hard Drive – oh wait, it already does.

The Mac App Store — Another Means To Kill The CD

There are a few reasons why I’m against optical drive, the biggest being they’re becoming useless in today’s download everything world. Aside from pirates, the biggest proponent of downloading media is Apple and 2011 will be have another potential nail in the optical drive’s proverbial coffin: The Mac App Store.

January 6th will be the App Store come full circle in the form of the Mac App Store. Creating a central hub for developers to promote their Apps is one thing but giving them them everything they need from hosting to an audience of millions? Is there any need to keep the optical drive in for much longer when almost any App you can install on your Mac can be downloaded through the Internet?

Dead And Dying Media

What happens once the death of the optical drive comes to fruition? For one, this prediction will be correct and I’ll be sure to bring this post up again. More importantly, nothing. The MacBook Air received some backlash for the lack of an optical drive despite a $100 (then reduced to $80) add-on but sales haven’t plummeted because of no optical drive. Consumers understand the MacBook Air is meant to be an ultraportable Mac shaving weight and thickness wherever possible. It’s a compromise that gives us the MacBook Airs we know today.

Consumers will understand the trade-off of having no optical drive in their latest MacBooks but the pros far outweigh the cons. Besides, I’d rather pay for the add-on if needed and have a slimmer, lighter Mac that can pack more power than a Core 2 Duo.

The latest rumor: the iPad 2 could be coming to Verizon.

The 3G version of the iPad is only compatible with AT&T’s 3G UMTS network. The hardware needed for the table to connect to Verizon’s network — a CDMA modem — isn’t available in the iPad. That could change with the next generation iPad according to DigiTimes

Apple is expected to release three versions of iPad 2, supporting either or a combination of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA, for 2011 with mass production to start as early as the later half of January. Apple will ship about 500,000-530,000 units to channels in January with shipment ratio of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA models at 3:4:3, according to industry sources, citing upstream component makers.

The iPad is available to purchase from Verizon but requires the use of a Mifi or portable 3G hotspot that connects to the tablet over Wifi and accesses Verizon’s CDMA network. If this rumor is true, consumers won’t need to purchase a separate mobile hotspot and will be able to choose which carrier they want to use with their iPad before they purchase the device.

RIM, Motorola, HTC and Samsung just to name a few are packing their high end smart phones with circuitry that would make a computer jealous with dual core CPUs being the newest trend. According to an analyst however, Apple could be bringing a dual core CPU to the iPad 2 and iPhone 5.

Analyst Ashok Kumar believes Apple will be bringing a pair of ARM A9 Cores to the next generation of iOS devices.

“Apple is on track to refresh the iPad by March and iPhone by late summer. A key component upgrade across these platforms will be a dual-core processor featuring a pair of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores,”

Is Apple developing a successor to the A4 (a fusion of an ARM A9 core and GPU) that will pack double the cores? Only time will tell what silicon Apple’s working on thanks to its purchase of PA Semi.

I have a feeling the next iteration of iOS devices is where we’ll start to see Apple flex some more custom silicon as it starts to apply PA Semi’s work.
