Apple removes Anti-Virus Support page

Yesterday a variety of sites posted about Apple’s support page that “encouraged” users to install anti-virus software on their Macs. After it was discovered that the article had actually been up for an extended period of time, Apple removed it, saying that it was “old and inaccurate”.

“We have removed the KnowledgeBase article because it was old and inaccurate,” Apple spokesman Bill Evans, told Macworld. “The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box.”

The Knowledge base article had been updated in the last few weeks, but it has been available on the site since last year. With the document removed, Apple’s site now offers very little information about viruses and virus protection.

The Apple rep did concede, however that anti-virus software might add additional protection in the end. “Since no system can be 100% immune from every threat, running anti-virus software may offer additional protection.”

  1. Let’s just hope they are right about saying the article is old and outdated, and a virus does not break like wild fire! Then they will really feel stupid for not taking the article serious! Just my thought on the subject! I hope to agree with Apple on this one!
